Our Livestock Guardian Dogs
We are now raising the second generation of livestock guardian dogs (LGD) that have been with our family and homestead since 2020. We started with Aspen, a sweet natured, protective Pyrenees-Anatolian-Akbash female, and Zion, a Pyr-Akbash male whose gentle and loving personality wins over everyone he comes into contact with. They had their first litter in Spring of 2024. Both of these LGD’s are the best chicken guardians ever!
Our Chickens
We started with a small flock of Barred Rock & Rhode Island Red breeds in 2009 and fell in love with raising chickens! Not only do they produce delicious eggs, but they also are wonderful for insect control, property maintenance, soil health and are so much fun to watch! Over the years we have gradually increased the size of our flock as well as the variety of cold-hardy breeds. We doubled our flock size in Spring 2026 to fulfill our community’s growing needs for affordable fresh chicken eggs.
Our Property
We purchased five and a quarter acres of wooded land in 2017. The home was large enough for our family of nine, but unfortunately the land had not been maintained for over 35 years! As you can imagine, that is a lot to undertake - the fuel load is massive, especially with the amount of bark beetle timber that fell on the lower part of our property. We have slowly but surely been working on thinning & chipping the vegetation for wildfire mitigation and to restore the forest health. Overall our vision is to maintain the native biodiversity while implementing wildfire mitigation efforts to benefit the forest ecosystem for future generations & wildlife to enjoy.
Hangs on the Homestead Blog
Welcome to our blog! Just wanted to let readers know, we are not those homesteaders that have generational experience through decades of family members that passed down their homesteading wisdom. Nope, not us. We are ‘newbies’ so to speak. We have been enjoying the rural life for about 23+ years now & are just trying to ‘live the dream’ aligned with what God has planned for our family & property. That being said, we thought a blog would be a great space to record our rural living experiences as well as share projects, recipes, thoughts, faith lessons and much more!
